A while back, I went out for sushi with Jackie. I wanted to try a new place, so we figured Typhoon might be worth a shot since it is equidistant from us, and they also had a 15% off coupon on their website. I heard they were at least decent. Typhoon serves a bunch of various "Asian" hot foods but I didn't try any of those. The description of the sushi rice process on their website made their sushi look quite promising.
various sushi - salmon, hamachi, tai, uni, spicy tuna, negihama, some unagi roll - about $40-50
I'm gonna keep this short. This sushi sucked. The irony of it is that despite the emphasis on sushi rice on their site, this was the worst sushi rice I've ever had in a restaurant. I'd say it was probably even worse than supermarket sushi rice. It was just horrible. The fish, fortunately, was not bad (not great either), but the rice really made everything almost inedible. I pictured the rice being made in the morning and just chilling on the counter or something all day (we ate at 8pm or so). It would have been better used for fried rice. I've read that Typhoon's hot dishes have more promise, but to be honest I'm never setting foot in there again.
yea u tell them arthur!

You went to 'Typhoid'?!?! I can't believe you went to 'Typhoid'.

The person who has reviewed this restaurant is clearly has no experience with the fresh made sushi in Japan.
Typhoon is known for its sushi and sushi rice's ingredients. He/she has mentioned "it's worse than supermarket's sushi", what? he/she has eaten those sushi before? That's the cheapest and horrible way of eating sushi. If so, he/she is clearly has no taste of Japanese sushi. Go to Tokyo, or closest California, have some sushi, then yo'll know what Typhoon is made out of.
I am an Italian-American who worked in Japan for 6 years. I know how sushi is supposed to be. And Typhoon, Ginza, Oshii are my faves.
Please, do not insult yourselves rating a business when you're nothing close to what you're about to spread your bad mouths.
Thank you.posted by Francis Turo on August 10, 2005 12:37 AM
I agree with Fran.
I lost the web address of Typhoon in Boston so I went searching for "typhoon boston sushi" and found this site.
What a terrible character this reviewer is. Typhoon's sushi has been the only spot my family and I always come out to. Anything close to Typhoon's sushi would be Shinko in Manhattan, who specialize in just Teppanyaki and sushi.
Well, shame on the reviewer's taste. Maybe trying to spend more money at fine sushi restaurants would help your taste.

Francis and Sherman, I've thought a bit about how to respond.
First, I do not claim to be an expert on anything. I will say, though, that of all the different foods out there, I probably know sushi better than others. I find it slightly ironic that you suggest I go to Tokyo (I've been there, as well as other parts of Japan), or at least California (where I've lived for pretty much my entire life). Then again, you also refer to me as he/she, so I digress.
I thought it was a little bit strange that such passionate defenses of Typhoon would appear on consecutive days, especially considering that no one in their right mind would consider the sushi at Typhoon good. So I did a little investigatory work and found that both comments above are posted from the same IP address. From that I must conclude that you must really, REALLY love Typhoon. I mean it'd take a serious fan to pretend to be two different people to defend the place on a rather inconsequential internet blog. Either that, or you're somehow affiliated with the restaurant.
It's really too bad if the latter is true. It'd be another first here at AH if a restaurant actually posted fake comments. Rather than accept criticism and attempt to improve, you attack not just my taste but my character? That's a little bit rough, don't you think?
Anyway, to compare the sushi at Typhoon to the sushi at the finest establishments in Japan is an insult to those great sushi houses. The world-class sushi that I tried in Japan is one of the major inspirations for this site; those meals had a true impact on my life.
Please don't post this fake crap on my site.

Shame on you, not to admit your taste is low. And not to take other people' comments is another weakness.
However, your response answers who you really are, nothing but a hungry public loser. Not a food critic.
Making up the "IP" address thing is another insult to your personality.
However, you own the website, so just delete the comments that you "hate", or the "truth" that you hate.posted by Francis on August 22, 2005 01:59 AM
It's funny that you would cite the "truth" as one of Arthur's weaknesses when you have clearly been caught fake posting under different names. As this is a fairly obscure website, I can only assume that you sir are the sorry man in search of empty public accolades rather than honest criticism. Why would a food critic ever retract a statement if he was in search of the truth? Additionally, as far as I can tell, none of your comments have been deleted, despite their rambling nonsensical nature. Shame on you.

What a bunch low life you guys are. So if you're hungry, just beg! Only the homeless would use such bad language. So beg! Let me guess, you guys are the "up-graded" street beggars. Using the internet to express your stress.
"Caught"? May be you couldn't read. What "IP" addresses? Don't just make up an excuse to stronger your statement. You can do better than that.
I will contact Typhoon and let them know about this website and your staff' behaviors.
This will be my last to get insulted by reading your website and give comments.
Now, maybe this would help. Grow up! All of you. Authur Hungry ? Go beg for a burger.

Just a touch of clarification. I am not staff at AH. I am independently calling your posting practices into question based upon Arthur's response to your two prior comments. While I myself am not staff and cannot see the IP addresses to confirm my suspicions, the way that the two posts share very similar writing styles seems to support the fact that are both you. A burger sounds delicious. Good day sir.

That's cool. Like a catchy song.

As a funny foot note to this little squabble. Last summer there was a little article in the Boston Herald (or other Boston Newspaper in fairly wide circulation... not some tabloid) that basically called out Typhoon's Website and web staff for fraud and plagerisim. They accused them of posting false reviews and comments on other websites as well as posting fake pictures on the resurants web site. I recall seeing one or two scanned from Ming Tsai's Blue Ginger Cookbook. In respose the resurant basically flipped on the web co. and sid that they didn't know that their web co. was doing such things. They did not in any way refute that false comments and reviews were made however.

Typhoon is my first to try sushi and it makes me a fan today. The blazing salmon with black tobiko was delish. Kimchi steak was also a winner. Oh well, when it comes to food, it takes forever to discuss what's good, how good, or what's bad and how bad ... However, they've been there over 6 years, they must've done something right. Or else, they could gone like the "40-year-old-legend rock'n-roll Gyuhama", which was located 1 block away.
I guess this Typhoon swept Gyuhama out of business, since there are only 3 sushi places on the same street. So who's next?

Why are you still at it? If you're gonna post fake comments like 8 months later, at least change you're freakin IP. I'm almost insulted that you think I'd be this blind.
I'm sorry, but I have lost any shred of possible respect for Typhoon. I'll be sure to tell everyone to never go there.

As the other person who was with Arthur Hungry that fateful night at Typhoon, I can assure you (Tom/Francis/Sherman whoever you are) that it really was an unforgettable experience... one that I would never want to have again. It's been almost a year since we went, and I still suffer from nightmares about the stale rice that was used for our "sushi". Instead of wasting your time defending Typhoon on this website, you should be trying to improve the quality of food that is being served to the customers. Arthur's description of our dining experience was also very generous towards Typhoon. I felt the restaurant deserved a much harsher review.
In addition, attacking Arthur's character and experience with food is completely unwarranted. He has a very experienced culinary palate and at the same time is open to trying many things (besides Ketchup). It's obvious that his opinion matters a lot to you for you to repost 8 months later.
I will also be sure to tell everyone never to go there.

Oh well, you've got me. Haha.
Tell you what, have you ever heard of "bad competitors" ? Well, face it. I am paid for what I'm doing. Basically, why don't you contact Typhoon directly and speak to its manager about this. Because I don't think they even have a clue what people are talking about them out there.
Have fun boys and girls.
This is my pay-day and my work is complete, thanks to Jakie:"I will also be sure to tell everyone never to go there.

Hi, My wife and were ignored by the waitstaff at a patio on Newbury St. So we got up and left and walked around the corner and into Typhoon, sat at the sushi bar, the service was excellent and extremely attentive. Our coktails were very good and the sushi we ordered was excellent. We ordered a spicy scallop maki, which was delicious and served creatively. We asked the party next to us what the maki was that they had ordered, because it looked good and they told us "Phoenix" which was not on the menu (yet), but the sushi chef cheerfully created this for us. My wife and I have eaten tons of sushi all over Boston and Typhoon was excellent. We will definately go back there, nice atmosphere, reasonable pricing, accessible patio and excellent service. The rest of you sushi snobs, stay away from Typhoon, cause I dont like to deal with crowds.
